As a native Californian, Jenni Kayne knows a thing or two about celebrating life’s biggest moments (or just a Tuesday) alfresco. “The weather is so beautiful in the summer, which means all we ever want to do is go outside,” says the fashion and furniture designer, who just released The Vista Collection, her first for outdoor spaces. “Some of my favorite memories revolve around being outdoors with friends, catching up over wine or a great dinner. The days are long and there’s an easygoing nature that’s tied to summertime that makes each gathering feel celebratory.”

Even if you don’t have the benefit of Southern California’s year-round sunshine, there are certain ways to make your get-togethers a dreamy escape. Here’s how Kayne outfits her parties in the great outdoors.

Best Table for a Crowd

I love Terrain picnic tables for parties because they’re light, easy, and always look great. I move them around my yard depending on the event.

Chair That Doesn’t Sink Into the Grass

I love picnic benches for that very reason!

Best Tray for Serving Dinner

I prefer family-style or buffet [to serving my guests], because it feels less formal. I do use this wood tray to carry things in and out of the house to set the table.

My Plastic Cutlery Alternative

Our Sabre flatware is my go-to—I have the ivory and the buffalo, and both colors work with any tabletop style. But if it’s a large party or I don’t want to do dishes, I’ll use bamboo flatware.

The (Mostly) Unbreakable Wineglasses

The Roli Poli glasses from Bitters Co. are great for outdoor entertaining, whether it’s for water, wine, or cocktails. They’re made from recycled glass, so they’re quite durable.

Plates That Set the Scene

I use our Pacific dinnerware outside, or if I want something that won’t break, I’ll put out enamel plates from Crow Canyon. We’re launching a collection with the company this summer, which will be great for hosting.

Blanket I Have on Hand for Chilly Nights

One of my long-standing outdoor hosting tricks is to keep baskets of our Alpaca Basketweave Throws outside so guests can keep warm as the evening gets chilly.

Mosquito Repellent That Does the Trick

This natural repellent is my secret weapon in the summer.

Portable Speaker That Keeps the Vibes Going

We’re lucky to have Sonos indoors and out, but I can always rely on my Bose portable speaker.
