How We Chose These Products

To pick the best wagons for kids, we queried Domino staffers with children; reached out to design-world friends who appreciate a model that’s long-lasting but also stylish; and researched “best of” lists, best-selling models, and dozens of versions for sale online and in brick-and-mortar stores. We also tapped Andrew Bowman, chief innovation officer at Veer and former designer at Graco, for advice on how best to select, care for, and clean wagons. Our metrics included durability (we are talking about kids, after all), ease of use, and weight limits—and included extra features. Our picks scored high marks on all of these, while still being aesthetically appealing and cleverly designed.

Types of Wagons

“There are two main categories but a wide range of products within those,” says Bowman. “Traditional wagons are usually a single piece with or without removable wood slat sidewalls. They are fun for kids and great for neighborhood walks to the park, but are limited in usage because they aren’t ideal for mixed terrain and don’t fold.” 

In the past five years, “the stroller-wagon has become increasingly popular,” he adds. “There is a broad range of options in this category in terms of capacity, weight, fold style, and features.” The stroller wagons are generally kitted out with features like sunshades and cup holders, as well as safety harnesses for bumpy terrain.

Material

“Traditional wagons are either nearly all blow-molded plastic or formed metal bases with removable wood sides,” says Bowman. “Stroller wagons are usually either very much like strollers (about a third fabric, a third plastic, and a third metal like aluminum and steel) or about a 50-50 split between metal (steel and aluminum) and fabric.”

Size

Bowman advises that if you plan to use your wagon often and want to take it with you for outings, it’s important to consider its size when folded and the overall weight. That’s because you’ll have to lift it in and out of your car. “Additionally, pick a wagon that is durable and can grow with your family, not just in the number of kids it holds but in the accessories and features that you might want to use for years to come,” he says.

Weight Capacity

“Kids will have fun riding in a wagon much longer than a stroller, so you want something that they can grow in,” says Bowman. Consider the weight per seat, overall weight limit (because you will likely also tote gear), and the dimensions of the seat and wagon interior (including sunshade height). “In many cases, a child’s height may impact their comfort in the wagon sooner than they will hit the weight limit,” he adds.

A: “Most wagons on the market will accommodate kids from ages 1 to 4, but there are great options that accommodate larger kids,” Bowman says. “There are just a few on the market that can accommodate an infant car seat and be used from birth.”

Q: How much weight can a kids’ wagon hold?

A: This depends on the wagon, but the majority can hold somewhere between 200 and 350 pounds.

Q: How do you clean a wagon?

A: “For wagons that are hard-sided and made from plastic, those can be surface washed,” says Bowman. “For stroller wagons with fabric siding, the washing instructions will vary. Before purchasing, review the product’s recommendations, because outings with kids gets messy and you will want something that is easy to clean. Most parents find that the more hard surfaces there are (versus fabric), the easier it will be to keep the wagon clean.”
