Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

A well-designed space, according to interior designer Nate Berkus, is all about investing in the right things. And a mattress, he argues, might very well be the most important. “I would put mattresses and kitchen renovations in the same category,” reveals Berkus, who is the latest celebrity designer to collaborate with Serta. And after creating one bedroom after another over the course of his career, Berkus has found the most personal purchase a client can make is their mattress, which is why he has never helped them pick one out. “The last thing I want to do is craft this incredible space for someone and get a phone call that they’ve slept there one night being like: ‘The mattress is really uncomfortable.’ It’s something people should choose for themselves,” he says.

But where to start? Mattresses are sold everywhere, from major chains as large as Walmart and small independent retailers to online marketplaces and directly from the manufacturers themselves. Even shopping in-store and lying on every potential pick will never quite equate to the commitment of bringing a mattress into your home. So we compiled a list of our favorite brands—and subsequently the best places to buy a mattress—below, focusing on a range of offerings, easy deliveries and returns, and sleep trials longer than 30 days.

Our Favorites

Best for Free Removals: Saatva

Sleep trial: 365 nights | Return policy: Free returns within 45 days, otherwise a fee of $99 | Price range: $$-$$$

What we like

  • Free white-glove delivery and setup
  • Organic, sustainable certifications aplenty
  • Sales often around any holiday
  • Variety: innerspring hybrid, memory foam, latex, youth and crib, even a fully adjustable option

Worth noting

  • Every mattress is made to order, so lead times are a little longer

Why we chose it: Don’t want to deal with disposing of your old bed? Saatva has your back (in more ways than one).

While Saatva is our go-to for quasi-customization—with the Classic mattress, you can choose between different heights and comfort levels, for instance—and eco-friendly yet luxurious materials, there are other reasons to shop directly through its online site. For starters, a yearlong trial period offers one of the best risk-tree testing opportunities, and partnered with a lifetime warranty, it’s a company you can trust. But what really sets it apart from others is not only the free delivery, but what comes after: It offers a four-hour window on delivery day to bring it into your room, set it up, and remove your old mattress, free of charge. Even if you decide you can’t make the designated day work or have a last-minute meeting or appointment scheduled, you don’t have to worry about being charged a late fee.

Best for Celebrity Collabs: Serta Simmons Bedding

Sleep trial: 100 nights | Return policy: Varies based on retailer | Price range: $$-$$$

What we like

  • Free returns
  • White-glove delivery (includes removal)
  • Easy to buy at multiple retailers

Worth noting

  • Can take a few weeks to ship

Why we chose it: For an endorsement backed by celebs, a Serta Simmons Bedding brand is your best bet.

Serta Simmons Bedding has been manufacturing mattresses since the 1930s, so it definitely knows a thing or two about this product; it makes sense that celebrities are comfortable enough to collaborate on a limited-edition project. Berkus is the latest to add his take to the mix with the Beautyrest brand, a list that boasts Domino cover star and fashion designer Christian Siriano. TikTok maestros Charli and Dixie D’Amelio have also worked with Simmons. And Serta’s Shinola collab can also be found on our list of the best memory foam mattresses. Essentially, you’ll be able to snag a quality bed whether you prefer hybrid or memory foam, but with limited-edition, unique design details (think: a graphic white and blue pattern or detailed stitching). With Berkus’s creation specifically, we love that there’s varying levels of firmness to choose from, including plush and extra firm. The other benefit of this brand? It’s sold pretty much everywhere, including Mattress Firm, Sam’s Club, and Raymour & Flanigan, as well as large online retailers like Wayfair, depending on your needs. Though going direct secures your 100-night in-home trial.

Best for Affordable Buys: Nectar

Sleep trial: 365 nights | Return policy: As long as condition is good enough to be donated, returns are free | Price range: $-$$

What we like

  • Fast free shipping and returns
  • Can make one exchange request
  • Frequently on sale, with bundle deals on sheets and pillows

Worth noting

  • Heavy

Why we chose it: If you can’t stomach the four-digit price tag that comes with most mattresses.

Among all the Sleep Foundation experts we spoke to, Nectar came up as a favorite, most notably for its affordable price paired with a yearlong in-home trial run (we’d say that’s a pretty good bet for a quality bed). The fact that this bed is usually delivered within two to five days doesn’t hurt either. While there’s really only one type of mattress, it topped our best memory foam, best twin, and best soft mattress guides. Twelve or 13 inches (the taller is the Premiere) in height, this bed offers an initial sinking hug (but not too deep) with plenty of support thanks to the layered construction, making it ideal for back and side sleepers. And despite most hot sleepers not jibing much with memory foam, Nectar’s Tencel blend wicks away moisture at the top, or you can upgrade to the copper for extra relief (the material refuses to retain heat). But no matter which you end up choosing, all are backed by a lifetime warranty.

Best for Eco-Friendly Finds: Avocado

Sleep trial: 365 nights | Return policy: Deliver to a local donation partner for refund within 72 hours | Price range: $$-$$$

What we like

  • All organic products
  • Free of polyester or polyurethane
  • Made in the U.S.
  • Handles make its heftiness easier to maneuver

Worth noting

  • Expensive

Why we chose it: Every environmentally conscious certification you can think of, Avocado probably has it.

Adding a mattress from Avocado has been the secret to a healthy hideaway for a while now, whether it’s certified organic wool, cotton, or, yes, even latex. The brand is keen on transparency, meaning you can trace materials back to its own herding and harvesting collectives. Plus everything is needle-tufted by hand in Los Angeles, so there are no glues, toxic solvents, or water-based adhesives. Even if you decide your buy isn’t a fit, the return process is geared toward making sure your product doesn’t end up in a landfill. But before initiating a pickup, the Avocado team will try to troubleshoot what isn’t working first (for instance, maybe a mattress topper can help?) before connecting you with a local donation service.

These mattresses are incredibly cozy, too—choose either a standard or pillow-top bed to switch up your firmness levels. While the Green mattress is a consistent favorite, it’s not the only option available. You can even snag something designed with your children in mind, from crib to kid-size mattresses that’ll fit on a trundle bed, so the whole family can take advantage of organic support. (Did we mention the 25-year warranty?)

Best for Two-Day Deliveries: Amazon

Sleep trial: Usually 30 nights | Return policy: Varies | Price range: $-$$$

What we like

  • Fast shipping
  • Free pickup to remove unwanted mattresses
  • Returns don’t always require you to repack

Worth noting

  • Trials and warranties subject to seller

Why we chose it: Yes, you can find some of our favorite brands on Amazon.

We’d be remiss not to include Amazon on this list—the seemingly limitless marketplace really does have it all (Casper, Nectar, and Tuft & Needle to name a few). If you have a Prime account, you can take advantage of two-day delivery.

You do lose some of the benefits of shopping for a mattress directly, most notably when it comes to sleep trials. While Amazon is pretty apt to accept returns on everything (within a 30-day period or 100-day window if unopened), the actual policy may differ if you purchase through a third-party seller and even make warranties complicated. Usually, brands will work with Amazon to pick up your mattress or assist with a return, either back to the company or a donation center/charity, though it may cost you an extra fee. If you end up stuck with the mattress, Amazon will help remove it.

We Also Like

  • At Walmart, you can find some of our favorite value picks in all sorts of constructions, including the Mainstays memory foam, which topped our list of the best affordable mattresses
  • Purple has garnered quite a cult following, and while there are only three different bed types to choose from, we found it to be the perfect hybrid innerspring mattress.
  • Wayfair may arguably have as much variety as Amazon, including our top brands (Casper, Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Beautyrest, Serta, and more).
  • There are five mattresses to choose from at Allswell, and all are less than $1,000 for a queen, can be tested for 100 nights risk-free, and returned and shipped for free. The only drawback? You’ll have to pay $149 extra to have the company take your old mattress away.
  • One of the best soft mattresses can be had from Tuft & Needle; it offers the perfect balance of plushness and support, though here’s what we love: a 100-night trial, 10-year warranty, and fast delivery (one to five business days).

How We Chose These Products

Let’s face it: The world of bedding is super-saturated and overwhelming—but sometimes you need a new mattress. At Domino, we strive to prioritize bedding brands that balance style, high-quality manufacturing, and eco-conscious attributes. Our editors and writers conduct hands-on testing when possible, and we tap industry experts for their input, dig into brand stats, and conduct independent research. The best places to buy a mattress not only offer free delivery (and oftentimes free removals and returns) but unrivaled sleep trials, which is key, since there really is no shortcut to the ideal bed—you just have to try it.

Our Shopping Checklist

Mattress Materials

While innerspring mattresses are the most traditional and affordable, and known for their bounce factor (great for stomach sleepers who need a firm level of support), today’s modern memory foam mattresses also offer a host of benefits, including the ability to be shipped in a box. Some designs are infused with gel (this helps regulate your body temperature while offering ergonomic support, a boon for hot sleepers) or offer open-cell structures for added breathability, and usually include multiple layers of foam in different densities that help avoid that quicksand feel. And last but not least, hybrid mattresses are a sandwich of springs and foam, offering the best of both worlds, including coils for breathability. We almost always prefer natural materials, so if you want to avoid memory foam, there’s latex—which can outlast all of these materials in terms of durability—which is derived from rubber trees. It’s supportive and cushy but also the best cooling mattress material you can get.

Direct vs. Retailer

Don’t get us wrong, Amazon is a great one-stop shop for mattresses of all kinds (including some of our favorite brands), but there are benefits to shopping directly from the manufacturer versus a third-party retailer, in-person or online. While you may be limited a bit in terms of variety—these are sites where you can find any type of construction or material, after all—you’re most likely to discover a good deal (especially if you wait to shop around holidays). Retailers and sellers can also often shake up a brand’s return policy, warranty, or sleep periods with their own, which you should keep in mind.

Delivery and Setup

The best places to buy a mattress will often offer free white-glove delivery, which means all you have to do is be home when the mattress arrives. They’ll do all the work for you in terms of getting it into your bedroom, setting it up, and removing packaging and—sometimes—even your old mattress if needed.

With a memory foam mattress, you’ll likely have to wait a full 24 hours for it to unfurl and inflate to its normal size. Otherwise, other mattresses are ready to be used as soon as the delivery truck leaves your driveway.

Warranties and Sleep Trials

Most brands now boast generous trial periods to help ensure you are happy with your purchase. One hundred nights risk-free has become the norm, with some companies going above and beyond; Saatva, Avocado, and Nectar all off sleep trials that last for 365 nights.

A long warranty period also indicates that a mattress is of superior quality. A 10-year warranty has become a great benchmark, with Nectar offering a whopping lifetime warranty that covers most physical flaws and defects, as long as it has been used and maintained properly.

Ask Domino

Q: What month is best to buy a mattress?

Like most things, mattress deals are best around holidays—think: Memorial Day and Fourth of July—and specific sale-based dates like Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Q: Any telltale signs that my mattress is worn out?

How long a mattress lasts depends on the material it is made from: Foam, hybrid, and spring mattresses should last around a decade (and there are plenty of manufacturer warranties to back that up), though latex foam derived from rubber has a bit more longevity and can last anywhere from 12 to 20 years (talk about an investment). But if you notice you’re waking up with odd aches and pains unlike years before, your mattress sags without bouncing back, there are indented impressions of you, or you just can’t seem to get comfortable, all of these might be signs of it showing its age.

Q: How can I keep my mattress clean?

Sheets are the main layer separating you from your mattress, which can shield it from sweat and oils, but a mattress protector will offer even greater protection. Otherwise, the easiest way to prolong the life of your mattress is vacuuming it every other month or so. All sorts of things that your eye can’t see can build up on the surface, from dust mites to bacteria.

If you need to complete a deeper clean, baking soda can neutralize any odors (just suck up the powder afterwards), or spot-clean stains with a little bit of detergent and blot it up with water (though let these areas dry thoroughly first before putting on a new set of sheets).

The Last Word

The best places to buy a mattress are online—we compiled a list of retailers, marketplaces, and brands that we not only love but are the least likely to cause a headache when it comes to delivery and setup or, eventually, returns. A mattress is a huge investment, which is why you’ll want to test yours out for a minimum of 30 nights to make sure it’s the right foundation for your bedroom.
