Lavender, orchid, eggplant. Fuchsia, pomegranate, plum. I saw a comment on Instagram recently: “Purple goes with everything in the plant world.” With interiors rife with flora and fruit and color these days, the hue is inevitably finding its way into every nook and cranny. Let’s explore a few of them. |

I’ve been noticing purple in all kinds of homes lately, whether loud—splashed on walls, drenching furniture—or soft, like a ceiling slicked in pale lilac. The more deeply pigmented shades cuddle up to another of-the-moment color, espresso, while the lighter tones certainly make their case for being neutrals. Here are the best ways I’ve seen the wide world of purple used lately.

Nine plays on purple:
01. Bed Threads makes extremely soft sheets and table linens in luscious colors like rosewater, terracotta, and limoncello. Also present? Lavender.
02. This Objects for Objects bench reminds me of a french fry, but maybe I’m just hungry.
03. I love homes and products that juxtapose, or pull inspiration from, two different styles or time periods. Nordic Knots’s Climbing Vine rug does just that with its leafy Gustavian border against a contemporary lilac pop.
04. I’ve been enamored by the British snug since I wrote this Cotswolds home tour for Curbed several years ago. I imagine this Graham & Brown wallpaper in the New England inn I’ll own one day.
05. I still haven’t moved on from one of Le Creuset’s latest hues, shallot. In fact, it’s one of my favorite colors the brand has covered its cookware in to date. Psst: Staub has a similar hue.
06. Will purple take over baby blue as the kitchen cabinet color du jour? Yes, if this Reath Design project in the Hollywood Hills has anything to say about it.
07. Contemplate this for a minute: Could purple play a supporting role in a room? On Hay’s Mags sofa, this laid-back shade absolutely argues for that.
08. A 2023 trip to Norway took me and my husband to Trondheim, where we encountered Røros Tweed everywhere; the local brand’s throws and cushions are made just two hours south of where we were visiting. Stateside, you can find pieces like this punchy purple Berg pillow on Amazon and Design Within Reach.
09. When our first collection with Heather Taylor Home launched last year, I immediately fell for the tablecloth in pomegranate and lilac stripes.

In the ROYGBIV spectrum, purple has no shortage of detractors—everyone knows someone who says they are staunchly anti-purple. I might have counted myself among their ranks in the past, but recently these finds have made me a believer. |

Color-Conscious Sofas Hay clearly has a knack for doing lilac right—its Arbour sofa joins the ranks of the Mags in sporting it stylishly. Over at Floyd, the subtly checked Kvadrat Sisu upholstery on its Form sectional is mesmerizing. And is there anything more lucious than this cocktail hour–ready Maiden Home sofa? • Hay Arbour Sofa, Design Within Reach, $4,995
• Four-Piece Form Sectional in Blue/Red, Floyd, $5,345
• Varick Sofa in Merlot, Maiden Home, $3,825 |

Purple isn’t just popping up in spades at home. Whether I’m paying attention to sports, fashion, beauty, or cooking, I’m encountering it.
• Did you know that the Paris Olympics track is purple this year? Here she is in all her glory.
• Shoe brand Eledera’s made-to-order ballerina flats come in no less than 10 versions of the color.
• I did a very low-fi Internet color analysis of my skin tone (our deputy editor did a proper one, if you’re curious) and found out lavender should be one of my go-tos. • My secret to getting people to like eggplant, the actual vegetable? Serve them this twice-cooked version from chef Michael Solomonov.
• Actress Nicola Coughlan donned a mauvy eye for this Vogue editorial, and it strikes just the right balance of dramatic and dainty. |
