It felt so good to see our first-ever Home Front Trend Watch go out the metaphorical door this week. It’s dedicated to arguably the most transformative tool in design: paint. Have you checked it out yet? I share the DIY I’m expecting to see more of, inspired by an aesthetic that keeps popping up in this very newsletter.
Today, content creator (and, lately, product designer) Arvin Olano is taking over. If you’ve followed him for even a short time, you know his fashion sense rivals his design eye, and one is often influencing the other. For fall, Arvin is proposing bringing a cozy fabric that’s typically relegated to our closets into our interiors—read on to see what he’s thinking for his own home.

What I’m loving right now: Suede! From baby blue suede–clad walls to suede furniture. It’s an unexpected fabric choice that I don’t see often these days. But when I do, it stops me in my tracks.
Why I love it: Its tactile quality. Suede is unlike any other material—it brings a lot of depth and nuance to a room. In fashion, it’s a seasonal fabric, reminding me of chilly autumn days, but I believe it can be a year-round material for our homes. It feels luxe and unexpected. |

How I’d bring the look home: -
I’m currently trying to convince my husband to clad our hallway in suede. Something about it feels so right for a mid-century home. The fitting room walls at the brand-new Toteme boutique on Melrose in L.A. are clad in baby blue suede. I wanted to brush them with my hands the entire time I was there, and eventually I did! Sticking to either strong saturated neutrals, like camel, or bold colors will highlight the texture of the material.
- Because suede is quite delicate, it would be great incorporated into accent pieces like ottomans, stools, and chairs. Pillows or suede-wrapped trays and lamps can also be a fun way to try it.
-
Pair it with furniture with a metal body (above)—think: lacquered metal or steel, like B G Robinson’s aluminum sofa with butter yellow suede upholstery.

What’s the next…
Paint color you want to use: Fashion inspires the colors that I’m into, and recently I’ve been wearing a lot of dusty blue. Plus butter yellow has always been a staple in my wardrobe.
Material to get its moment: Of course I want to see suede get its moment, but I know it’s not the most practical. I do think all things lacquered (above left), from furniture to walls, are coming back in a contemporary way, which is exciting.
Trend to make a comeback: Gray! I feel like it has been hated on social media for a while now, but I think it’s a great color to balance all of the warm tones that we’re seeing (above right).
Trend you hope goes away: LED light strips. They do not have to be applied on every surface!
Decor item you’re on the hunt for: Art! Our walls are empty because I have the hardest time with artwork.
Vintage score of your dreams: A 1940s curved corner sofa by Danish designer Viggo Boesen. DIY you might actually do: I have a pair of contemporary sconces in black metal that I want to spray-paint a rich Japanese red à la Jean Prouvé.
Design risk you’re taking: I usually shy away from color, but lately I’ve been inspired by one of my favorite clothing brands, Tibi, to use color in a way that still feels calming. I know that doesn’t sound risky at all, but to me it is.

What’s the last… - Thing you invested in for your home: A large vintage cabinet by Jean Prouvé (above left). It’s the centerpiece for our formal living room.
-
Thing you got for a steal: A wood-fired ceramic from George Vincent with a circle print design on the front. It reminds me of a painting I saw on 1stDibs.
-
House project you tackled: We finally stained and sealed our wood ceiling! We used Benjamin Moore’s semitransparent Natural Cedartone stain for the perfect warm tone.
-
Gift you gave: A candle from a brand I recently discovered called Amoln, in the scent Museet. It has a very complex fragrance that is hard to describe, which is my favorite kind.
-
Post you saved: A metal sculpture of a horse seen through a floor-to-ceiling window of a modernist home shot by Yoshihiro Makino.
-
Account you started following: Charlotte Taylor. I love her lived-in style. She’s inspired me to have a few more things out on display in my home.
- Photo you snapped: A preview of one of my new rugs for Rugs USA (above right), launching this October!
