Gustaf Westman is letting go of perfection.

I’ll admit it: I have a habit of going overboard with Christmas gifts. I end up buying friends and family a bunch of fun little things…that they never really use. So this year, I’m getting everyone one really good gift that’s also practical.

One of my first stops will definitely be Insta-famous product designer Gustaf Westman’s Brooklyn pop-up, which will run from Thursday, October 10, through Sunday, October 13, at 25 Fillmore Place. It will be stocked with his always-sold-out Chunky wineglasses and their Chunky beer glass counterparts (perfect for my IPA-obsessed brother), and I’m hoping to see his funky flowerpot and candleholders, too.

Ahead of the opening, I caught up with Gustaf to hear what’s inspiring him lately.

What I’m loving right now: A bit of randomness and variety in interior and furniture design. Everything doesn’t have to be perfectly matched or superpolished anymore! I’m obsessed with artist Katherine Bernhardt’s work—her home is amazing as well. Swedish interior designer Beata Heuman and JW Anderson founder Jonathan Anderson are other favorites.

Why I love it: Don’t get me wrong, I think that quality and craftsmanship are the most important parts of the furniture industry. But to attract a younger generation, we need to adapt to a different tempo. When it comes to my own designs, I try to make them stand out but still be very simple. Take my curvy sideboard: It has my typical style but it’s sold to all types of homes (eclectic and colorful spaces as well as more luxe places). I hope more big companies join in and let their guard down a bit; it would be fun to see!

How I’d bring the look home:

  • Books everywhere! Put them in unexpected places, like in a pile on a chair.
  • Lots of colorful blankets as bedding.
  • Mix vintage and new when you buy kitchenware. Some of my favorite places to shop are Coming Soon, Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm, and Ssense.

My shopping list:

  1. This cup by a Swedish guy called Gustaf is cool.

  2. He also makes some really nice and chunky wineglasses.

  3. I love this little lamp; it gives some color to a room.

  4. My favorite blanket from the Swedish brand Klippan.

  5. This Jonas Bohlin chair is a dream of mine—very expensive, but I love it.

Pro tip: Only get things you like and they will look good together. Don’t try to match, it’s boring.

What’s the next…

  • Paint color you expect to see everywhere: Very bright yellow (above left).

  • Material to get its moment: We have done some experiments with mycelium packaging. You can basically throw it out into nature after using it. I’m working with a company called Kineco on this, which was started by my old coworker Petter.

  • Trend about to take off: I have my ideas, but I won’t give it away that easy!

  • Trend you hope goes away: Millennial branding, but it’s already happening.

  • Thing you’re on the hunt for: Anything by Joe Colombo.

  • Pattern you want to play with: Stripes (above right).

  • Design risk you’re taking: Trying to design apparel.

What’s the last…

  • DIY you tackled: I made a side table for Emma Chamberlain (above left). Maybe it’s not exactly a DIY, but it’s 3D printed, and I made the 3D file! So a digital DIY 😊

  • Thing you splurged on for your home: My Togo.

  • Gift you gave: Tulip bulbs for my mom that I bought in Amsterdam.

  • Post you saved: Whatever Loewe uploaded.

  • Account you started following: Addison Rae.

  • Photo you snapped: When I packed my luggage for New York! It’s Rimowa with stickers (above right) designed by Jenny Hedlund.

It’s been a full week of no sunshine here in New Jersey, and needless to say, I need a pick-me-up. Verloop could be the definition of dopamine decor—its knit pillows, blankets, and other accessories are a joyful mishmash of rainbow brights and graphic patterns.
