And the project she’s embarking on next.

What I’m loving right now: Plywood! It can change the energy of a space instantly from uninspired to thought provoking. I love that plywood is a material that is typically viewed as “cheap” or “unappealing,” because I can turn it into a beautiful piece of art that is unexpected. It feels warm and casual while also making it clear that the space was intentionally designed.

I’d recommend it to someone who also likes…industrial design, artistic and thought-provoking homes, experimenting with DIY, and warm spaces.

Where I’ve spotted it in the wild:

  • Plywood has historically been a crucial material when it comes to making furniture or decor pieces, especially because you can bend it to make curved edges.
  • In the past few years, I’ve seen a huge rise in covering entire homes (floor to ceiling) in plywood as a statement and utilizing it in unexpected ways that showcase its interesting grain.

Three real-life ways I’d try it:

  1. Covering a whole wall in plywood, then adding shapes (also plywood) on top as frames for mirrors or storage. This is something I’ve already done and I love it.
  2. Layering pieces of plywood into an art wall, another project I did in my office. More people need a funky plywood wall in their homes!
  3. Using plywood perpendicular to a surface as opposed to laying it flat. It would look amazing on a large wall.

It looks great with…bright pops of unexpected color, color-blocking, varied textures, nontraditional and industrial styles, and steel or black finishes.

If money, time, and space were no object, I’d…custom-build an entire room out of plywood—all the surfaces and furniture, all handmade—with a couple splashes of color to really highlight its beauty.

My shopping criteria: Choose a wood species, whether maple, pine, etc., and stick with it. I personally love maple because I’m from New Hampshire; I like to showcase local lumber. And never buy a piece if you don’t like the grain!

My elevator pitch to skeptics: Try removing any inherent bias you have toward the material. It has so much more to offer than just its budget cost—I’ve seen it transform spaces with such minimal effort.

How I see it evolving: Plywood will become more and more popular due to the rising costs of materials in general. I do my best to help popularize it with DIY ideas on social media, and I see other creators doing the same.

What’s the next…

  • Paint color you want to use: A chartreuse, like Stardust by Backdrop or Chartreuse by Benjamin Moore. I love pops of the color, especially in industrial spaces, but I haven’t found the perfect space for it yet.
  • Decor item you’re on the hunt for: A stunning pendant light made of stainless steel that appears to be dripping.
  • Vintage score of your dreams: A Boby storage trolley—I’ve been eyeing this design for years now!
  • Design destination on your bucket list: Kyoto, Japan. I love the unique curved forms used in the city’s architecture and the integration of nature into design.
  • Home project you’d like to tackle: Making a custom-shaped entryway—kind of like an arch opening, but instead it’s a unique shape that fits the space.
  • DIY you might actually do: Paint a mural under my kitchen island counter with plywood parts showing through.
  • Trend you hope makes a comeback: ’70s wood wall paneling. Yes, I said it! I think homes feel so much cozier and more inviting when there’s warm wood everywhere. It hurts me to see people ripping it out for plain drywall!

What’s the last…

  • Thing you bought for your home: A bunch of pegboards that I put together to create a pegboard wall. It’s super-functional for organizing excess office supplies.

  • Post you saved: This video. I have been super into embroidery lately, and I figured I could use this same technique on a storage caddy or wall art.

  • Account you followed: @stylingwithkenzie on TikTok. I’m inspired by the way she transforms other people’s lives and the format of her content.

  • Photo you snapped: I saw some flowers in my yard and took a picture. I’ve been saving small moments like that lately to print as Polaroids and use on my corkboard.
