What we talked about in September.

September always gets us itching for a change (blame it on the invigorating chill in the morning air). So naturally, we channeled our urge to shake things up into Home Front. Read on for last month’s highlights.

In Case You Missed It: Lindsey Mather reimagined her home bar, Samantha Weiss-Hills revisited her all-time favorite house tours, and Lydia Geisel cataloged her favorite IKEA finds of late. Plus the first-ever Home Front Trend Watch dropped—this one is all about paint!

If you’re pro butcher block like Zillow predicts, here are links to the two stories we reference for some inspo: this mint green kitchen by DeVol and this Bloomington, Indiana, renovation.

More stuff we Slacked about: Samantha came across the prettiest candle packaging, Lindsey alerted everyone about this hidden gem on Wayfair, and design director Brit Ashcraft asked if anyone had sat in this sunny yellow chair IRL. (Answer: No, but now we want to.)

Monthly MVPs
Monthly MVPs

Prepare yourself for a lot of Lydia’s IKEA finds (we get it; our love for the Swedish retailer runs deep) with a smattering of fun bar accessories and warm woven accents thrown in.

  1. A $17 IKEA lamp with a glowy tiltable pink shade.

  2. The hanging wall basket Samantha clocked in this cozy Hudson Valley home tour.

  3. IKEA’s genius new sleeper sofa, which unfolds sideways (aka out of the way!).

  4. A space age–y laundry cabinet for sorting whites and colors—and keeping them out of sight (yes, it’s also from IKEA).

  5. A squiggly marble catchall to corral wine keys and beer openers—or anything, really.
  6. Swirly rainbow tumblers hand-blown in upstate New York.
  7. The wicker lamp that sits on Samantha’s bar in her Brooklyn apartment.

  8. Spooky cocktail napkins that Lindsey would use year-round. (Psst: They’re on clearance!)

  9. A bottle of gin that’s as easy on the eyes as it is on the taste buds.

  10. A sweet little rug—IKEA again!—in an of-the-moment lavender and olive colorway.

We recently asked which iconic IKEA design you thought was really worth the hype, and the Billy bookcase was far and away the winner with 39% of the vote. We’re guessing that’s at least in part because of the endless DIY possibilities. Here are a few noteworthy Billy upgrades we’ve covered, in case you’ve got a free Saturday to fill.

  • Cheery floral fabric panels and a lick of red paint for an English countryside vibe.

  • Wall-to-wall “built-ins” for a grand total of $500.

  • A glossy green bookshelf-slash-bar courtesy of a handheld paint sprayer.

A peek into our editors' camera rolls, from Napa to Copenhagen.

“I have not considered displaying wine bottles on a shelf as decor since I was in college, but I must say, the supercozy tasting room at Failla Wines in Napa has inspired me to style my books alongside some vino.” —Lydia, home editor

“I pass by this florist every morning on my walk to our local coffee shop, and they just redid the storefront for Halloween. I’m digging the au naturel spookiness of the twisty vines and spiderwebs.” —Lindsey, digital director

“A behind-the-scenes peek at our photo shoot for the 2024 Domino Good Design Awards—that’s contributing style editor Julia Stevens working her magic on our kitchen and tabletop picks. Psst: We’re announcing the winners soon!” —Brit, design director

“My husband and I whisk away to Copenhagen every September, and I can’t say it’s not an excuse to check in on some of my favorite brands. We dropped into the Ferm Living and Frama showrooms, and I’m never not in awe of the way Danes mix materiality and texture.” —Samantha, managing editor
