From a mini tile backsplash to a sweet little sink skirt.

We’ve been heads down over at Domino putting together a couple exciting new projects, most recently our third annual Good Design Awards (have you seen the winners yet?). Luckily, like many editors I know, I thrive on a deadline. Being under a time crunch makes overthinking impossible—you just have to power through, trust your gut, and get some words on the page. This also means that if I have forever to get something done, it may never happen—see: the various halfway-started projects around my house. But I have a plan... —Lindsey Mather, digital director

As Domino’s digital director, getting inspired to make a design change is the easy part—my Pinterest boards are jam-packed with ideas from our stories. I’ll even go so far as to order all the necessary tools and materials if it’s a DIY project. It all goes off the rails when I have to set aside time to actually do the thing, even if it’s a small tweak. Blame it on new parenthood or burnout, but I’ve got to get cracking somehow. My new strategy: Write my home projects into existence here, then put due dates into my Google Calendar just like I would any other task. Plus I have timing on my side: What’s a more imposing deadline than the last day of the year?

Here is what’s on my to-do-or-else list:

01. In a moment of weakness, I agreed to buy a cheap sectional off the floor of a big-box retailer that shall not be named. Its silhouette is nice and simple, but the quality and the clunky square legs leave much to be desired. The latter I can do something about: I want to swap them with these quirky-cool round ones.

02. After we wallpapered our dining room and painted all of the trim blue, the basic black door handle stood out in the worst way. I found a vintage glass-and-chrome replacement—similar to this guy, if you’re also in the market—that’s patiently waiting to be installed.

03. Ever since I saw the powder room in this Reath Design project, I’ve wanted to re-create the mini tile backsplash. I ordered $3 zellige samples from Clé in a bunch of colors to adhere to a piece of plywood, in case I change my mind in a year (likely).

04. Our main bathroom has the original 1930s pedestal sink, which is charming in theory but rather dysfunctional in reality—zero storage! How smart is Louise Roe’s cottagecore sink skirt? It can hide all manner of ugly necessities, and she hung hers with simple Velcro.

05. Our guest room triples as an office and workout studio, so there’s no space for proper nightstands and table lamps. I’m debating between getting plug-in sconces—this mushroom-shaped wood fixture is one of the better-looking options—or a hardwired style faked with puck lights.

06. I’ve taken to walking around our neighborhood for front door inspiration; ours is currently a dingy, forgettable white. A similar house a few streets over has a rad Kelly green door that I fell in love with, but lately I’m leaning toward an almost-black navy.

07. I snagged a vintage mirror just like this one off Facebook Marketplace earlier this year. Mine is white, which feels a little juvenile. Enter spray paint! I’m thinking black for a pop against my bedroom’s olive walls.

There are a few home updates I’ve managed to finish, and I credit it entirely to them being genuinely easy—a couple of screws and you’re all set.

Clockwise from top left:

• These lo-fi bamboo roller blinds are not only an incredible deal, they were eons simpler to install then my pricier roman shades upstairs.

• I’m dying to upgrade the multiple ’90s ceiling fans in our house, but for now I’ve switched out the dated bulb shades for these purposefully retro globes.

• New hardware was the key to bringing the traditional wood cabinet I inherited from my childhood home into modern day.

• When we moved in, the dining room fixture was a sad boob light. I immediately remedied that with a pendant lighting kit and Hay’s classic rice paper orb.

Projects I can confidently say I’ll never do but daydream about all the same.

• No-sew café curtains for the sunniest yellow pantry.

• Custom-stamping a pattern onto your home’s concrete sidewalk.

• Covering a bathroom in Calacatta Viola marble—wallpaper, that is.

• Painting a surprise striped detail on the inside of a doorframe.

• Faux stained-glass windows, but in a squiggly pattern.
