It’s always impressive when anyone lives in a home for more than two decades, but it’s especially true for a person like Clare V. founder Clare Vivier, a lifelong collector. You’d think she would have run out of room in her L.A. home by now! But that’s not the case—our September digital cover star has mastered the art of going with the flow. She’s not afraid to sell a treasured item (like the baby grand piano her kids never play anymore) to make way for something new (the striped sofa she designed in collaboration with Schoolhouse). With no plans to move on from her charming Craftsman just yet, we asked Clare what’s inspiring her next cycle of home updates.

What I’m loving right now: Pops of color within closets or cabinets. I remember noticing this on Atelier Karasinski’s Instagram a few years ago, and the image (below left) stuck with me.
Why I love it: That hit of color I get whenever I open the wardrobe doors or walk into my kitchen. It gives my antique wineglasses a fun backdrop and adds personality and constant inspiration to my closet. |
|
|
How I’ve brought it home: My dressing room closet in my house in France (above right) and the cabinets in my L.A. kitchen. My general rule is when you want a pop, you should balance it with a neutral. So since we started with the idea of the back of the kitchen cabinets being orangey red, I knew that the exteriors had to be a softer color that went with that. Farrow & Ball’s Charlotte’s Locks (based off of the color of a F&B designer’s hair!) and high-gloss Pink Ground look beautiful together.

Pro tip: Paint inside a bookshelf or a credenza for a less committed version, and use a glossy finish for even more punch. |

What’s the next…
Paint color you expect to see everywhere: I don’t expect to see it everywhere, but I really love it when people paint rooms phthalo green.
Material to get its moment: Murano glass chandeliers.
Trend about to take off: More color in homes! I think people are tired of the sad beige interiors trend.
Trend you hope goes away: I like patterned cement tiles when they’re vintage or used in an authentic way, but they’ve been overused in the “cool-hip house” version of corporate renovations. Thing you’re on the hunt for: I
always dream of having a vintage Liberty print Togo sofa—I don’t even know where I’d put it, but it’s so cute, I just want it.
Vintage score of your dreams: I’ve never found one for the right price, but I’d love to find a Murano glass picture frame.
Pattern you want to play with: Too hard for me to choose just one!
Design risk you’re taking: High-gloss, color-drenched rooms.

What’s the last…
Home project you tackled: We just repainted the interior of our L.A. house and added new lighting and plants (above left).
Thing you splurged on for your home: A vintage Lucite and chrome lamp by Peter Hamburger for Knoll International.
Thing you got for a steal: The rugs from our new Schoolhouse x Clare V. collaboration.
Gift you gave: Our La Vie de Clare V. coffee-table book.
Post you saved: “10 Rothkos, 10 homes” for slide five, Bunny Mellon’s insouciant-looking library. Account you started following: @airport.looks. I fly a lot, and I like it when people dress nicely to travel.
Photo you snapped: A chair from MidCentury LA (above right).
