For manifestation pro Lacy Phillips, they’re a staple.

Somehow, it’s November—am I really about to pull out my winter jacket?!—but let’s rewind to our dreamy July cover story starring manifestation expert and To Be Magnetic founder Lacy Phillips and her 1930s hunting cabin. The sleeper hit in our tour of the Topanga Canyon property was definitely the tented guest “room” complete with wood-framed windows and an outdoor shower. Imagine waking up there! Turns out, an at-home glamping experience is kind of Phillips’s specialty. Here, she gives us the rundown on her latest creation.

What I’m loving right now: Dressed-up tents for a different kind of guest experience. Our properties are rural and in some of the most beautiful places in California: Topanga, Mendocino, and Yosemite. One of our staples at each house is a dressed-up custom tent, so visitors get to really be with the elements and nature. We just designed this one (above).

How I’d bring the look home:

  • At our Topanga home (above), we completely customized the tent and included a Big Sur–inspired outdoor bathroom in the back, complete with a vintage claw-foot tub, toilet, and sink. It might be our friends’ and family’s favorite spot to stay, as they can hear the coyotes, crickets, and owls at night. And they have the best vantage point on our property; they can watch the marine layer pour into the canyon amid the Santa Monica mountains.
  • A tent could also make an epic home office or a wonderful playroom for kids that is detached from the main house and closer to nature for them.
  • Consider the elements. Our home in Yosemite gets a lot of snow, so we built a roof over our tent there to hold the weight of it. A mini split system is truly the hot tip to complete the upscale camping experience so that guests have AC and heat!

Clockwise from top left:

  • I tend to source a lot of vintage and then zhuzh it up. For instance, I sourced all vintage lamps, but then I dressed them up with this shade, this one, and this one.
  • For guests, I always provide a sound machine, earplugs, and an eye mask if they are light sleepers.
  • I can’t get enough of green gingham at the moment, so I had cushions made in this fabric for our vintage Salterini peacock chair set.
  • I’ve held onto a vintage Morsø stove with squirrel reliefs for about four years now. I’m so excited to finally be using it in this space, so of course I had to get a yellow Japanese kettle to go on top for tea and coffee to complete the glamping experience.
  • For the tent-curious, we got all three of our tents from Davis Tent; one is totally custom with vintage windows and doors.
  • Flamboyance is my favorite word in design; therefore, I couldn’t resist this sheet set paired with this duvet.
  • I’ve gone with witchy maritime vibes for the newest tent, so of course it needed a siren bottle opener and an Ashley Brazil ceramic vase and candelabra.

What’s the next…

  • Paint color you expect to see everywhere: Mustard, like India Yellow by Farrow & Ball or Roma by Portola Paints. I’m so drawn to it. Although I was one of the first in the trend to paint our house in Yosemite black, then it took off, and now it’s a bit overdone.

  • Material to get its moment: Ribbon. Now that we are edging into the holidays, I’m into putting bows on candleholders to bring the Victorian maritime energy.

  • Trend about to take off: Whatever lights you up. Once you do it, you’ll see it everywhere.

  • Furniture you’re on the hunt for: Victorian furniture with claw feet and quartz balls inside of them!

  • Vintage score of your dreams: My 1900s center-fill bathtub.

  • Pattern you want to play with more: Plaids!

What’s the last…

  • Renovation you tackled: We are currently deep in the remodel of all the outbuildings at our home in Mendocino. We are about to convert this original 1930s water tower (above left) into my office.

  • Thing you splurged on: Hiring Mila Floral, who makes arrangements from our native garden weekly (above right). She does the most witchy creations!

  • Gift you gave: These stunning pillowcases woven by the nomads of Tibet.

Each week, we ask our guest editors about a trend they want to see more of, plus one they’d like to go away. I’ve noticed a theme in their answers: less predictable, neutral interiors; more personality, color, and maximalist flair. One antidote to a bland space?
